After experiencing severe pain in his abdomen, Orleans, Ontario, resident, Stephane Gouin visited his physician and was told the pain was being caused from excessive visceral fat surrounding his liver. His doctor diagnosed him as obese, and prescribed a nutrition and exercise program.

“As a father of two young girls, this news was enough to convince and motivate me to do something,” said Gouin. “I immediately changed my diet from fast-food and soft drinks, to high-fiber, protein-rich foods and began working out regularly.”

Gouin began jogging and weight training two to three times a week and in nine months time was able to lose 40 pounds. He was full of energy, but felt like he could be doing more to drop the weight faster. He purchased a home gym from Life Fitness for his house and was able to workout more and push himself even harder. In only a year, he was able to lift 50 percent more weight than he could when he began exercising.

“This whole experience has been an incredible one, and I feel like I have given myself and my family the best gift of all: many more years with their dad and husband,” said Gouin.

As a result of his story, Gouin was recognized by Life Fitness and was awarded as a finalist in the company’s annual “I Live It!” campaign. This program celebrates individuals who demonstrate a commitment to lifelong health and well-being.

“Stephane's story is a reminder that fitness can help to combat many health risks,” said John Stransky, president of Life Fitness. “We hope that his story inspires others to take that first step towards a healthier life.”

Gouin continues to workout regularly, and plans to take up swimming lessons so that he can participate in his first triathlon next spring. He and his wife will be welcoming their third child later this month.
